Frostbite Race 2011/2012 results

Thank you to all who entered the races this season, what a great turn out!!!!

I would like to make an apology to Aaron Rowe, Aaron came 3rd in the 14ft division but for some reason I missed him out of the listings. Aaron is an amazing paddler and i forget he’s only 15 competing against men twice his age (sorry guys) and for that i’m deeply sorry for taking away a podia place from him as he deserves recognition for his skill and had work. We just need more of Aaron s generation to take up SUP so the sport continues to grow in Jersey and the UK.

Summer Sizzler Race 1 – UPDATE

Posted: 13th April 2012 by jerseypaddleclub in Summer Sizzler Race and Surf news

Sorry all but the weather for Saturday afternoon is starting to look just as windy as Sunday with also a chance of rain. So i’m moving it back to Sunday as we had a few that couldn’t make the Saturday and it would be nice to get as many people as possible for the first race and at the prize giving.
The race will be run in the corner by the harbour so if it’s easier drive down the slip at the church and drop boards off there.
We will race from the harbour around the pier, along the side of Mansell’s house around a few markers on the way back to to the harbour and out again. So 2 laps. After this we will run the Relay event which will be a shorter course.

There will also be a prize for who you think the most improved racer is over the Frostbite series and i will be asking you to tell me in secret who you would like to nominate.

So to confirm
Race date – Sunday 15th April
Time – 13:00
Venue – St Brelades Bay Harbour

2012 Frostbite Regional Final – Bray Lake UK

Posted: 5th April 2012 by jerseypaddleclub in Frostbite race news

On the 30th March a few boys from the Jersey SUP Club (John Harvey, Tim Rowe, Richie Langford, Aaron Rowe and Ben Langford) headed to the UK for the 2012 Frostbite Regional Final at Bray Lake just outside Reading which was being held on Saturday 31st March.

34 racers turned up for the event which was split in to Unlimited, 14ft, 12’6, Fun board, Ladies and Juniors.

There were 3 races set for the day. Each race would be a 1 mile lap of the lake which involved 2 major turns and narrow gates to paddle through. Each race you get points for where you place which get added together at the end to get you final ranking.

The start of each race was done in the water with paddlers lining up as best they could between 2 markers. On the horn it was a mad scramble to get in front otherwise you got caught up in all the wash and wake from the other boards.

Everyone from Team Jersey paddled really well with John Harvey taking 3rd in the 12’6 race class and Aaron Rowe taking a 1st in the Juniors and a 3rd in the 14ft class.

Tim Rowe placed 6th in the 12’6 class
Ben Langford placed 9th in the 12’6 class
Richie Langford placed 12 in the 12’6 class

Stand out paddlers from the UK were
Ryan James who smashed the 14ft class
Mark Slater who was on Ryan’s heels
Paul Simmons was a man on a mission in the 12’6 class, super focused
Peter Holiday gave Paul a real run for his money for 1st place.

A big thank you to John Hibbard from Starbaord UK for arranging the event.

Video of the day to follow soon.

Paddle Fitness with Ryan James.
For those of you who don’t who Ryan is well quite simply he’s the no1 SUP paddler in the UK, a fitness instructor and nutritionist.
I would like to bring Ryan over to Jersey on the weekend of the 28th/29th July to do a SUP fitness and paddle technique day with us on the Saturday and then he will take part in the races on the Sunday.
The charge will be £10 per person and that will include your day with Ryan plus your entrants fee for the races the next day.

Could you let me know if you want to be part of this and if your going to be in the island so I can get it all booked with Ryan.
This will be a great follow up to Steve West coming in June that Tim T is organising as Ryan has studied under Steve to get his Paddle instructors certificate.

Happy Paddling
John

OK lets talk Summer Sizzler

Posted: 28th March 2012 by jerseypaddleclub in Club News, Summer Sizzler Race and Surf news

The first event of the series is just a few weeks away and there is a lot of planning to do so we get off to a great start. With the winter series most races were done in the morning on big tides which sometimes made things a bit rushed with the tide running away from us.

So for the summer events I’ve tried to plan them around weekends when we have small tides with high being around mid day. This will allow us to run more events in one day and include a surf event if the swell is there. It will also allow us to make more of a day of it and get the family on the beach and a BBQ at the end (Weather permitting).

The planned venue for the weekend races will be Sands or Le Braye with Le Braye being the preferred option for the races and Sands for the surf events. Rocco tower is a great race marker.

First event will be Sunday 15th April.
The race schedule for the day will look something like this

10:30am – 2-3 mile paddle race along the bay and back. Call this a warm up for the day ahead

12:00 – SUP Surf Heats – If there is swell

13:30 – Technical race around a course of buffs. The distance will be around 1.5 miles.

14:30 – SUP Surf Final – If there is swell

15:30 – Relay race – a standard U shape course of teams of 2 each doing one lap. Teams will be decided on combined scores from the previous 2 races.

It’s a full on day but should be good fun and there will only be one of these a month between April and October (Except August which is a rest month) so plenty of time to rest.

There will also be after work paddle events arranged which will be at various bays around the island. These won’t always be races as it will depend on numbers and notification of these events will only happen a few days before so we make sure we have the best evening.

I will need help with organising the monthly events and it would be nice to get a few of you who will help at every event to get it set up, register entrants, keep scores, take photos, surf judging.
Names on a Postcard please :)

Also as I have said before if anyone has a better idea on where or how to run these events please let me know sooner rather than later.

Just a reminder the monthly events will be a pay to enter. This is non profit and all money raised on the day will go in to a bank account that will be used for prizes, medals and an end of series party. Again if any one feels this is wrong and the events should be free or the entrants fee is too much please let me know.
Entrants fee will be
£5 to enter either the Surfing or Racing or £8 to enter both.

Results from the last Frostbite race no 11 of the series

Posted: 26th March 2012 by jerseypaddleclub in Frostbite race news

10 racers turned out for the last race of the Frostbite series. Great surf and a few people of island meant we were 5 regulars down. The course was a new M shaped layout that involved multiple turns, strong cross winds and a bit more distance than the normal races.
John Harvey and Andre LeGeyt led the pack from the beginning soon gaining a good lead. The whole race John led just ahead of Andre until the final stretch when Andre made a break for it pushing John to step up a gear to catch up. The race finished with a beach sprint finish with both racers crossing the line in joint 1st overall. With Andre taking the 14ft and John the 12’6ft.
In 3rd place overall was Gary Smith who did amazingly well for his FIRST race and I’m sure with more practice will be a force to be reckoned with.
The stand out paddler of the day was veteran paddler Tim Rowe who fell off 3 times along the 2 lap course and each time he pulled him self back to the front of the main pack to finish 4th just behind Gary.

Due to a few regular racers not being able to make the last event the prize giving for the series will be postponed till the first Summer Sizzler race on the 14/15 April.

Summer Sizzler Information

Posted: 17th March 2012 by jerseypaddleclub in Summer Sizzler Race and Surf news

We’re just under a month away from the start of the Summer Sizzler Race and Surf Series 2012 which kicks of on the 14th/15th April.

The plan is to have 5/6 Champagne events through out the summer which will be pay to enter events.
£5 to enter race event which will be 2 or 3 races that day
£5 to enter the SUP Surfing event
or
£8 to do both. The plan is that the a percentage of the money taken will go towards a BBQ after the event and the remainder will go in to the club bank account to be used to help pay for the end of the Summer Sizzler series party and trophies.

All Champagne Race events will be held at Sands or La Braye depending on conditions on the day. All SUP surf events will be held at Sands.

As well as the Champagne events at the weekends there will also be Coke Bottle race events at various bays around the island in the evenings after work during the week.

These events will be free to enter and will be a similar format to the Frostbite races. The dates for these events will be decided the weekend before they are held so we can make sure we pick the best evening for weather and also make sure there’s no swell as I know I and most others would rather be surfing on a summers evening that racing.

Coke Bottle events will be great for people wanting to get in to racing or just for fitness and it will be good for the race veterans as training for the bigger events.

Mark ‘The Weather Man’ Creedon will be helping to decide the best venue for the Coke Bottle events in that week

Points system.

The Champagne events will carry more points as these are pay for event and the level of difficulty will be higher than a Coke Bottle event.
So an example is a 1st in a Champagne event will get the person 200 points but a 1st in a Coke bottle event will get you 100 points.

As always nothing is set in stone and I’m learning as I go with this so if anyone as any suggestions or comments please feel free to contact me.

Cheers
John

More information for Race no 11

Posted: 15th March 2012 by jerseypaddleclub in Frostbite race news

Hi Race fans,
Here’s some information on the next and last race of the Frostbite series.
Hopefully by now most of you will have seen the race course for the main race and hopefully you all understand it. The main race will kick off at 9:30am to allow more time to do the next races.

After the main race we will have the Ladies Race. The will be 2 laps of a course that will be decide on the day depending the conditions.

After the ladies race there will be the Relay Race.
The relay race will be made up of two man teams. The teams will be seeded against the results from the main race that day. So first will go with last, 2nd with second from last and so on. Each team will select one board to use which has to be a 12’6 race board. There are plenty of these so there should be enough. Each person will do one lap of a course to be decide on the day. If the ladies are keen to be a part of this then they are more than welcome to join in. More the merrier.

Prize giving
We have 3 people that can’t make the race – Ben & Richie Langford and Aaron Rowe. It would be a shame to do the prize giving with out them. So I’m proposing to do the prize giving at the 1st race of the Summer Sizzler of 15th April.
There will be prizes for the following –
14ft – places 1st, 2nd,3rd and 4th,
12’6ft – places 1st, 2nd,3rd and 4th,
Ladies – 1st Place
Relay – places 1st, 2nd,3rd

Hi

Here is the race course for race no 11. This is the final race of the Frostbite series so the course is going to be challenging and will involve multiple turns and beach sprints.
After the main race we will have a ladies race followed by a fun relay race with teams of 2 that will be seeded. Each team will do 2 laps of the pole.

Due to a few regular racers not being able to make the last event the prize giving for the series will be postponed till the first Summer Sizzler race on the 14/15 April.

Course details.

The Start and Finish will be separate.
Each racer will do 2 laps of the course with a beach sprint in between each lap
